Pastor of FBC Stering City reports after JMEA Conference

We could not have been more pleased with the results of our Spiritual Awakening Conference with Jon & Phyllis Moore earlier this month.  Our folks were challenged to get real in their walk with the Lord.  Jon’s penetrating style of preaching and ministry really hit home with our blue-collar and retired men.  The ladies were especially blessed!  We’ve waited for two years to see our ladies get to the point they were hungry enough to participate in a weeknight Bible study.  That will start in early May with over a dozen ladies committed! And with the “oil field” boom in our county, we are now poised for a growth spurt in our church.  Jon and Phyllis were the right folks for the right church at the right time.  We were ‘right pleased’ with how the Lord ministered to us through them.

Moderator – GETBA

To all : GETBA Pastors

I wanted to send you a quick note and a recommendation for your church. Last week, we had a Spiritual Awakening Conference, led by Jon and Phyllis Moore. While it was a revival-type emphasis, it was not your father’s revival. During the evening services, after the music time, Bro. Jon taught the men and his wife Phyllis taught the ladies on some challenges from the Word of God. On Wednesday, the final night, we came back together and had an old-fashioned testimony service.

As a Pastor, you are always “evaluating”. During the week I got several pieces of encouraging feedback from both men and women. However, I was still unsure of how the testimony service would go. Oh me and my lack of faith! Almost as soon as Bro.Jon extended the opportunity, a 50 year old man stepped forward to the mic to confess that after being a church youth minister at another church for years and leaving that ministry, that he rationalized that it was ok to start drinking again with his sons and friends and he shared that with God’s help, he was turning aside from that. I began to weep as I knew of this man’s struggle from when he had shared it with me previously. From there, people confessed anger issues, forgiveness issues, lack of spiritual focus issues. One by one, 13 men and women bared their souls and, in turn, were prayed for by a member of the congregation. It was the most powerful service I’ve been a part of since coming to Winona almost 5 years ago.

I would encourage you to consider schedule a Spiritual Awakening Conference with Jon and Phyllis Moore. Along with Jon having almost 40 years of experience in preaching revivals and leading conferences, his wife Phyllis spent over a decade partnering with Barbara O’Chester doing ladies conferences and retreats all over the USA.

Thank you Tony Watson!

Pastors and Church Leaders read the good news!

Dear Brothers in the Ministry,

I believe that all of us desire to see a movement of renewal and revival in our churches. Let me take a few moments of your time to tell you about Jon Moore, a man whom God is using to bring a powerful message of renewal and revival in the church.

Jon Moore was a pharmacist who owned his own pharmacy when the Lord placed His calling on his life to preach. He was pastor of a small church while earning his Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Theological Seminary. The “Jesus Movement,” the “Asbury revival,” and his association with Manley Beasley, a prominent revivalist, were all used by the Lord to influence his life. That impact was deepened when the family moved to Euless, Texas and joined First Baptist Church Euless when Dr. Jimmy Draper was pastor. But it was Jon’s own experience of revival during that time that had the deepest impact on his life and ministry.

Jon is a revivalist. Revival by definition happens to someone who is already a Christian, but whose spiritual life is in decline. God has given Jon unique gifts that enable him to communicate the life – changing Word of God in a way that connects with our modern culture. He has helped men and women from all walks of life to deepen their love for Christ and His Word.

This past November, we had Bro. Jon come and lead our Renewal Week@Portland Avenue on a Sunday morning through Wednesday night. My desire in hosting this meeting was that the church might experience some powerful days of renewal. We used a format for this meeting at Jon’s suggestion that worked very well in our setting. Jon preached Sunday morning and then Sunday night through Tuesday evening the men stayed with Bro. Jon and the women went to our Fellowship Hall where Phyllis, Jon’s wife, taught them. It was a powerful way for Jon and Phyllis to focus on specific issues related to men and women. At our final service on Wednesday night, Jon led the entire group through a powerful testimony time. In fact, it was the best testimony service I can remember in my twenty years as pastor of the church. Our church continues to ride the wave of renewal week.

If you are giving some thought about scheduling a meeting that focuses on renewal and revival, then let me highly recommend Jon Moore and his wife, Phyllis. Thanks for your time and please feel free to call me if you would like to know more or have any questions.

Blessings,

Walter

Prevailing in Prayer!

“You will seek Me and find Me when you search for me with all your heart.”  Jeremiah 29:13

“Hear my prayer, O Lord, Give ear to my supplications!  Answer me in Your faithfulness, in Your righteousness!  And do not enter into judgment with your servant, For in Your sight no man living is righteous.  For the enemy has persecuted my soul; He has crushed my life to the ground; He has made me dwell in dark places, like those who have been long dead.  Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me; My heart is appalled within me.”  Psalm 143:1-4

It has been a long time since America has seen the glory of God on a nationwide scale.  It almost seems that evil is prevailing!  Does the Lord have a Word for us here in the early part of the 21st century?  As is often the case, the answer for today can be found in days gone by.  God spoke through His prophet Jeremiah to let us know that He does not respond to half-hearted attempts on our part to seek Him, but He requires our whole heart.  David modeled this truth, even in times of great opposition and adversity (Perhaps more so in such times) to break though to victory.  “Thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress.”  Psalm 4:1

David reminds us that the follower of Christ can prevail in prayer in spite of his worldliness!  He confessed to God, “For in Your sight no man living is righteous.”  Many years ago a wise man of God defined success in the Christian life in a way I have never forgotten.  He said, “Success for the Christian is when what has been written of you can be said about you!”  Think of the many things that have been written about the people of God in the Scriptures.  “We are more than conquerors through Him that loved us!”  Romans 8:37; “You are the salt of the earth…the light of the world.”  Matthew 5:13,14; “You have overcome the evil one.”  1st John 2:13; “God always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests though us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place.”  2nd Corinthians 2:14; “You are dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”  Romans 6:11.  To the extent to what has been written of us can be said of us, to that extent we are successful.  Little wonder that David wrote that no man can be seen to be righteous in the sight of God apart from the grace of God!  Thank the Lord that by His grace, we are made righteous through faith in Christ (Romans 5:19).

David goes on to say that the Christ-follower can prevail in prayer in spite of his weakness.  He wrote of feeling persecuted, crushed, overwhelmed and appalled by the enemy.  Just as Jesus warned Peter that Satan had asked to sift him like wheat, we can be defeated by the devil when we face him in our own strength.  At such times, the temptation is to give in to distress and depression, but that very scenario can be the springboard to great triumph when we give our heart to believing prayer!

August Bartholdi spent ten years of his life designing a lighthouse for an entrance to the Suez Canal as he visited the pyramids, but there was no funding to build it.  Later, the country of France decided to give the United States of America his creation that would be known as the Statue of Liberty!  What seemed like a devastating disappointment ended up a magnificent success!

Confronting our weaknesses can either be a cause for pity, or a call to prayer!

Jesus Loves Me!

As I sat with my grandson several years ago, I was singing this old familiar song, Jesus Loves Me.   I have sung that song so many times to all my grandchildren, as well as my own children when they were young.  It is a simple tune and has easy words, but the impact of this song has a powerful truth.  This song has been sung by children and parents all around the world.

Anna Warner wrote these words in 1860.  It was written for a man who was comforting a dying child.  William Bradbury set the words to music in 1861.

“Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so; little ones to Him belong, they are weak, but He is strong.  Yes, Jesus loves me!  Yes, Jesus loves me!  Yes, Jesus loves me!  The Bible tells me so.”

What an awesome truth.  It would do us adults good to sing that song often and be reminded of the incredible love of God toward us.  Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”  Romans 8:35-39 “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?  Shall tribulation or distress, persecution or famine, nakedness, peril or sword?  For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor anything present, nor things to come, nor height, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Jesus loves you!!  Do you know this powerful truth?  I mean in the very depth of your soul, do you really know?

Overcoming Fear!

“For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power and a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

Every time we turn on the TV, radio, or read the newspaper there is more alarming news.  There is so much going on in the world today to cause fear and worry. Fear of failure, fear of the future, loss of jobs, loneliness, overwhelming debt, and so on, and so on we could go.  However, the Word of God says not to fear.  The Bible says not to let your heart be anxious.  Fear is a real emotion, but God gave us our emotions and with that gift, I believe, He can control them by the power of the Holy Spirit.  This is certainly not to say that He doesn’t use doctors, but truly God is the great Deliverer.

Given that every believer is alive in Christ and our souls are in union with the Father, why do we struggle with anxiety and fear?  In his book, “Freedom from Fear,” Neil Anderson states that the answer is two fold. “First, in a positive way, a certain amount of fear is essential for our safety and survival. Secondly, in a negative sense, our minds are programed to live without God.  Everything that we have learned before we became Christians is still in our memory bank, and there is no DELETE button.” The worry-some problems are everywhere and constantly assaulting our mind.   That is why Paul said in Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (By replacing what is of the old life with what is of your new life in Christ.)

Renew your mind in the truth of Bible scriptures and remind yourself that the God of this universe is your Father.  He created all things and in Him all thing consist.  God is covenant keeping and knows the end from the beginning.  The Lord is our Peace, our Counselor, and He is the Lord that will provide.  Ask Him to show you Himself as your “Strong Tower” in which you can run when fear assaults your mind and heart. “Peace I leave with you, My peace I now give you; not as the world gives do I give you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27

The Inspiration to Prevail!

“I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your doings; I muse on the work of Your hands.  I stretch out my hands to You; My soul longs for you, as a parched land.  Answer me quickly, O Lord, my spirit fails; Do not hide Your face from me, Or I will become like those who go down to the pit.  Let me hear Your loving kindness in the morning; For I trust in You; Teach me the way in which I should walk; For to You I lift up my soul.  Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies; I take refuge in You.”  Psalm 143:5-9

We live in a time when it seems that evil is winning the day.  David, the psalmist, experienced such times, yet he was inspired to pray until he prevailed.  Hopefully this passage will be an encouragement to every Christ-follower to pray for victory with a renewed confidence.

David was inspired to prevail in prayer as he remembered the Lord’s past works (vv 5-6).  We can learn from that!  There is spiritual strength in recalling the Lord’s past mighty works in behalf of His people in Bible times, in the history of the Church, in our personal life and in contemporary events.  We have a tremendous advantage over the old testament saints.  We have the record of the mighty acts of God in the Scriptures.  It is spiritually therapeutic to read, re-read and meditate on all these works of His hands.  It is also inspirational to read, re-read and meditate on the awesome works of God in the history of the Church.  Finally, it would benefit greatly every true follower of Christ to sit down periodically and make list of all the things the Lord has done to provide for and protect his or her life, as well as those of family and friends.

David found additional inspiration to prevail in prayer as he learned to recognize the Lord’s present ways (vv 7-9).  We can be reminded, as was David, that he was dependent on the Lord twenty four hours a day, every day of his life.  But we are not to stop there, but remind ourselves that we can always trust in the Lord’s faithfulness.  Regardless of the time, or situation, it is tremendously comforting and inspiring to be reminded that, “Faithful is He Who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.”  1st Thessalonians 5:24  David said, “I trust in You!” (v 8), and “I take refuge in You!” (v 9), and we can say the same thing!

The ancient Chinese used to foster hope in their theatre by using a two-level stage.  The main play was on a lower stage while the final act was on a stage above.  As the people watched the actors on the main stage going through adversity and trials, they could see how things worked out on the upper stage.  Armed with this information about how things would work out, the people in the audience would shout encouragement to the actors on the main stage to keep going in spite of their trials, and how things appeared for the moment.  The people of God have the final act clearly set forth in the Bible.  Even though we are beset by what seem like overwhelming problems, that which is revealed about the Lord’s character and being in Scripture, and our ultimate victory with Him should be more than ample to inspire us to continue to prevail in prayer!

The Basis For The Believer’s Authority!

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us  alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”  Ephesians 2:4-6

In far too many instances Christians feel like God is on one side, the devil is on the other and the believer is in the middle like a rope in a tug of war uncertain as to who is going to win!  The Bible paints a far different picture, describing rather a vertical chain of command with Jesus at the top, Christians under Him and Satan and  his demons at the bottom!  So this is why the seventy exclaimed excitedly, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name!” Luke 10:17.

We need to remember what Jesus Christ said to His disciples, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth!”  Matthew 28:18  Also keep in mind what the Lord said to the seventy before sending them out to minister, “Behold, I have given you authority…over all the power of the enemy…” with the added admonition, “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your your names are recorded in heaven.”  Luke 10:19,20  Earlier He made  a similar  commitment to the twelve disciples in Luke 9:1.  The emphasis here is clear that the authority and power rested in the Lord and were not the possession of His followers due to any characteristic of their own except their relationship to Christ.

What about believers today?  Does this have any meaning for us?  Does the Bible have anything to say whether we are included or not?  One of the great catalogs of Truth concerning those who are “in Christ” is found in the first thirteen verses of the book of Ephesians.  In that letter to the believers in the church at Ephesus the writer Paul, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, uses the term “in Christ” ten times in those thirteen verses!  The fact is that believers today are more “in Christ” than were the disciples, because the Holy Spirit had not yet been given, and He is the One who baptizes us “in Christ”!  1st Corinthians 12:12,13  Certainly the disciples were with Christ, and Christ was with them, but we are “in Christ”!  Therefore, according to Ephesians 2:6, we have been raised together with Him, and caused to be seated with Him in heavenly places “in Christ Jesus”.  We are told in Ephesians 1:20,21 that He (Jesus Christ) was raised from the dead and seated at the right hand of the Father in the heavenly places, “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come”.  So if you are “in Christ” then you have been seated with Him in the heavenlies, and you have been given authority by Jesus Christ Himself.  This and this alone is the basis for the believer’s authority!

I am told that in the Korean culture that people give their gifts to others using both hands.  This symbolizes that they are holding nothing back, but giving all.  Jesus Christ has held nothing back from His people, giving us all of Himself, including His authority, keeping in mind that that authority may only be exercised within the framework of our position “in Christ.”

The Real Purpose For Prevailing!

“Teach me to do Your will, For You are my God; Let Your good Spirit lead me on level ground.  For the sake of Your name, O Lord, revive me.  In Your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble.  And in Your lovingkindness, cut off my enemies And destroy all those who afflict my soul, For I am Your servant.   Psalm 143:10-12

The last nationwide spiritual awakening in America began in 1905.  It was basically an overflow of the great revival that began in Wales in late 1904.  That has been some 100 years ago, and the likelihood of anything approaching that in America appears unlikely anytime soon.  Could it be that this situation will finally bring us to our knees in brokenness, repentance and prevailing prayer?  We shall see.

That brings up some interesting questions.  Is there any ground for us to realistically expect to prevail in prayer?  What is the real purpose of prayer after all?  Psalm 143 is a prayer for deliverance and guidance written by the  psalmist David.  He was being pursued by King Saul and his army, and in utter desperation David begins to pour out his petitions to the Lord.  It is in these last verses that David appears to see what the real purpose of prayer is, and the sense of expectation that this realization produces.  First he comes to see that prevailing in prayer is for the glory of the Lord’s name, not personal benefit (vv 10,11a).  “For the sake of Your name, O Lord, revive me!”  It has been well said that we seem to be living in a time when a “consumer spirit” has infected the modern church.  What is the Lord going to do for me?  What blessings, benefits and deliverances will God provide for me today?  The truth is that getting answers to prayer is secondary.  The primary purpose is to get to know God and see Him glorified!  This is why He has to so often engineer our circumstances to where we cannot manage them by ourselves.  We are driven to our knees, and thus directed to Him.  Hopefully we transfer our focus from getting what we want to getting what He wants, and mysteriously this leads to a far greater blessing for us, as well as honoring Him.

This brings us to the secondary purpose for us to pray and prevail, and that is for the good of the Lord’s namesakes (vv 11b,12)!  When a person is genuinely saved He takes the name “Christian”.  The word literally means, “Little Christ”.  One is saying, “You can watch me.  You can listen to me, for now I am a little Christ”.  Obviously, this is a big statement, and one that should not be taken lightly.  One is saying that Jesus Christ now lives in and has lordship in one’s life!  It is a recognition of accountability by the individual.  It is also a statement of the Lord’s credibility.  A Christian’s life should be marked by characteristics that come from heaven.  Prevailing in prayer not only results in glory for the Lord’s name, but in addition, good for the Lord’s namesakes.

Today we have more in common with the old testament character David than many think.  A tide of evil threatens to inundate the world, and churches seem powerless to slow it, must less stop it.  Just as David’s vision enabled him to prevail in prayer, so there is a great need for men and women of vision to step forward today.  The year 2001 marked what would have been the 100th birthday of Walt Disney.  Long before anyone envisioned large theme parks, he mapped them out in his head.  After the completion of Disney World in California, someone said, “It’s too bad he didn’t live to see it”.  Someone correctly responded, “He did see it.  That’s why it’s here”!

Wounded, struggling Christians and churches need someone to prevail in prayer!  People without Christ who are broken by sin and alienated from God need someone to prevail in prayer!  Are you that someone?

Nevertheless!

Proverbs 73:23 “Nevertheless, I am continually with Thee.”

When I first read that verse I misread it and said to my self, “the Lord is always with us.”  As I read it again, I realized that was not the way it read.  David had come to the place where he really “knew” deep in his being that in every situation he was continually with the Lord.  He did realize his own failing, but by a glorious outburst of faith, he sings, “nevertheless I am continually with Thee.”  To live in the victory that Jesus has provided us in salvation, we also must by faith “know” (that deep revelation from God revealed to our inward parts) that we are continually with Christ.

We face so many trials and obstacles in life on this earth that sometimes we have to keep reminding ourselves as David did.  “Nevertheless, I am continually with Thee.” Since I belong to Christ, I am continually with God.  I am continually on His mind, He is always thinking of me for my good.  The eye of the Lord never sleeps, but is perpetually watching over my welfare.

As life brings the hard times,  as we are tempted to think that we are so far away from our heavenly Father’s presence, remember this verse: “Nevertheless, I am continually with Thee.” Rest in that truth that if we have received His Son, Jesus as our Lord and Savior, God is continually with us,  but we are also continually with Him.

Joy,

Phyllis
